Steel Bridge Team

bridge1

The goal of the steel bridge team is to design, fabricate and erect a steel bridge under a certain set of rules so as to compete at the Regional level, and hopefully get an invitation to Nationals.  At the University of Maine Civil Engineering department, we do not have welding/shop capabilities and so the bridge is usually fabricated offsite by a local fabricator.

At competition, bridges will be judged on construction time, weight, stiffness, load capacity, as well as aesthetics.  The event is put together by the American Institute for Steel Construction (AISC) in unison with the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE).  For more information, go to the student bridge website.

Students who have an interest with any level of experience are encouraged to join and help. It is a great opportunity to work in a group environment on a real engineering project, which builds on the fundamentals learned in the classroom.
