Research Interest:

Professor Humphrey has taught courses in ground improvement techniques, thermal soil mechanics, foundation engineering, and advanced soil mechanics. His research in using tire chips as lightweight fill, retaining wall backfill, and thermal insulation has received national attention. His other research interests include: geotechnics of waste disposal , behavior of the surface clay crust, and reinforced embankments. He was the recipient of the 1994 University of Maine’s Distinguished Professor Award.  In 1997, Humphrey was awarded the Governor’s Special Teamwork Award by Maine Governor Angus King.  Dana received the 1998 Presidential Public Service Achievement Award.  Dr. Humphrey is the Dean of Engineering since 2007 and has been with the University of Maine since 1986.
