Teaching Interest:
Soil mechanics, geotechnical engineering design, retaining earth structures, deep foundations, earthwork design, and advanced soil mechanics.
Research Interest:
His research interests include reliability-based design, soil-structure interaction, soil-nail walls, pile foundations, and flow through fractured rock. Past projects include Moscow Soil-Nail Project , Brunswick Pile Bitumen Project, and Brunswick Soil-Nail Project. He is chair of the Soil-Structure Interaction Committee for the Transportation Research Board. Professor Sandford was in engineering practice for 11 years before joining the University of Maine in 1981.
