Scholarship Qualifications

THE CARL WHITCOMB MEINECKE AWARD The gift of Mrs. Carl W. Meinecke, in memory of her late husband, is presented to a junior or senior majoring in Civil Engineering.  The award is made on the basis of character, scholarship, and promise by the Dean of the College of Technology and the Head of the Department of Civil Engineering.

BANCROFT AND MARTIN SCHOLARSHIP FUND was established in 1957 by the Bancroft and Martin Rolling Mills Company of South Portland, Maine.  The income only from this fund is to be used.  The minimum objective shall be to provide a full tuition scholarship for a junior or senior majoring in civil engineering at the University of Maine who are residents of Maine. If, in any year, the income exceeds the minimum requirements, one-half of the excess shall be added to the principle fund and one-half used for further objectives, each to be accomplished fully in the order stated below before the next is undertaken: (1) to provide full tuition to a member of the sophomore class majoring in civil engineering who is a resident of Maine; (2) To provide payment of laboratory and other required fees for the three student herein-before mentioned; (3) to provide necessary books and equipment for these students; (4) to provide the above benefits to one additional Maine resident member of each children of employees of Bancroft and Martin Rolling Mills Company or its successor, regardless of course or year of study. The students to receive the benefits as stated above shall be selected by the Office of Student Aid in consultation with the Department of Civil Engineering.

THE ROBERT V. CULLINAN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND was established at the University of Maine in 1985 by donations from friends and relatives.  The income from the fund shall be used to provide scholarship assistance to a resident of Maine with financial need enrolled in Civil Engineering.  Preference shall be given to a student in well rounded engineer should also be criteria for selection.  Recipients must be either a second year student in an associated degree program or a sophomore or junior in a B.S.  Degree Program.  Selection of the recipient(s) shall be made by the Office of Student Aid in consultation with the Dean of Engineering and Science.

THE MAINE SECTION ASCE SCHOLARSHIP FUND was established at the University of Maine in 1987 by a gift from the Maine Section, American Society of Civil Engineers.  The income from the fund shall be used to provide an annual award to a junior student enrolled in Civil Engineering at the University of Maine.  Selection of the recipient shall be made by the Civil Engineering Scholarship Committee.  Should there be no award in a given year, the income shall be returned to the principal.  The fund shall be administered by the Office of Student Aid.

THE RAY M. BOYNTON SCHOLARSHIP FUND was established at the University of Maine in 1988 by gifts from family and friends.  The income from the funds shall be used to provide scholarship assistance for civil engineering students enrolled at the University of Maine.  Selection of the recipients shall be made by the Civil Engineering Scholarship Selection Committee.  The fund shall be administered by the Chair of the Department of Civil Engineering.

THE FRANK SLEEPER SAWYER ’10 MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND was established at the University of Maine 1991 with a bequest from his wife, Marie Elizabeth Mange.  The income from the fund (to include appreciation) shall be used to provide scholarship assistance to financially needy and deserving students enrolled in Civil Engineering at the University of Maine.  Should there be no qualifying Civil Engineering student, the fund may be used for other students enrolled in the College of Engineering.  Selection of the recipients shall be made by the Office of Student Aid in consultation with the Dean of the College of Engineering.  The funds shall be administered by the Office of Student Aid.

THE GEORGE K. WADLIN II MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP was established at the University of Maine in 1992.  Dr. Wadlin was associated with the Department of Civil Engineering for 22 years as a Professor of Structural Engineering and Head of the Department.  The income from the fund shall be used for scholarship assistance to meritorious students enrolled in Civil Engineering.  In 1994, the fund was changed to provide that preference shall be given to students interested in structural engineering.  Selection of the recipients shall be made by the Department of Civil Engineering Scholarship and Awards Committee.  The fund shall be administered by the Office of Student Aid.

THE SHELDON D. SMITH ’48 CIVIL ENGINEERING SCHOLARSHIP was established at the University of Maine in 1923 with gifts from family and friends.  The income from the fund shall be used for scholarship assistance to Civil Engineering students from the State of Maine who have financial need.  Preference shall be given to first-year students and renewal shall be based on the following criteria.  Recipients must have demonstrated their potential to succeed in their profession and must maintain an academic grade-point average of at least 2.5.  Selection of the recipients shall be made by the Department of Civil Engineering in consultation with the Office of Student Aid.  The fund shall be administered by the Office of Student Aid.

THE AMERICAN PUBLIC WORKS ASSOCIATION SCHOLARSHIP was established at the University of Maine on 2004 by the members of the Maine Chapter.   The income from the fund shall be used for an annual award to a meritorious and needy senior majoring in Civil/Transportation Engineering.  Selection of the recipients shall be made by the Office of Student Aid in consultation with the Chair of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering.

THE H. WALTER LEAVITT SCHOLARSHIP FUND was established at the University of Maine in 1998 in memory of the Professor Emeritus H. Walter Leavitt who taught in the Highway Engineering Program from 1917-1955. (Previously the fund was known as the H. Walter donor, Alton S. Hamm ’38, it was changed to a scholarship assistance to students majoring in the department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (or its successor administrative unit.)  The award shall be based on academic achievement with first preference shall be made by the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering.  The fund shall be administered by the Office of Student Financial Aid.

THE RALPH G. KNOWLTON FUND was established by friends of the late Ralph G. Knowlton, Class of 1948, College of Engineering and Science at the University of Maine.  The income is to be used for one or more annual scholarship awards to a sophomore, junior, or senior, preferably a resident of Maine, who is enrolled in Civil Engineering in said College at said University.  Financial need will be considered but of primary importance is that the student be sound character with potential of developing in a good all-round engineer.  Preference is to be given to a student whose major interest is with some phases of construction industry, and priority may be given to a student who exhibits an interest in the safety aspects if the industry and/or labor relations.  The student or students shall be selected by the Chair of the Department of Civil Engineering, in consultation with the Office of Student Aid, and a member of the construction industry, the President of Cianbro Corporation or his designee.

THE ASCE STUDENT CHAPTER RECOGNITION AWARD was established in the University of Maine Foundation at University of Maine in 1985.  The income from the fund shall be used to provide annual award(s) to an active participant(s) in the ASCE Student Chapter in recognition of service and professional aptitude.  The recipient(s) in the ASCE Student Chapter in recognition of service and professional aptitude.  The recipient(s) must have completed two semesters in Civil Engineering at University of Maine and have a minimum grade point average of 2.3 out of 4.0.  Previous recipients of the award are not eligible.  Should there be no award made in a given year, the income shall be returned to the principal account.  Selection of the recipient(s) shall be considered by the Civil Engineering Scholarship Committee Chair or his designee, four ASCE Student Chapter officers, and the previous year’s recipient, if available.  Should ASCE cease to exist, the award shall be considered by the Civil Engineering Scholarship Committee, and the selection process shall be in accordance with the above guidelines.

THE WESTON S. EVANS SCHOLARSHIP FUND was established in the University of Maine Foundation at the University of Maine in 1984 by gifts from family and friends in memory of his many years if dedicated service as Dean of Technology. The income form this fund shall be used to provide scholarship assistance to a student(s) majoring in the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Maine.  The award shall be based on academic achievement in the Structural Engineering Program at the end of the student’s junior year.  Selection of the recipient(s) shall be made by the Department of Civil Engineering and administered by the Office of Student Aid.

THE BLACKWELL FAMILY SCHOLARSHIP FUND was established in the University of Maine Foundation for the University of Maine in 1989 with a gift from Ruel J. Blackwell ’39 and his wife, Catherine Weeks Blackwell ’72 in memory of his brothers, Percy L. Blackwell ’21 and Everett E. Blackwell, ’27.  The income from the fund shall be used to provide scholarship assistance to an upper-class Civil Engineering student who has a satisfactory academic standing and financial need.  The recipient of the award must have been born and educated in the State of Maine.  Selection of the recipient shall be made by the Office of Student Aid in consultation with the Civil Engineering Selection Committee.  The fund shall be administered by the Office of Student Aid.

THE WILLIAM R. GORRILL CIVIL ENGINEERING SCHOLARSHIP was established in the University of Maine Foundation for the University of Maine in 1991 in honor of William R. Gorril, Professor Emeritus of Civil Engineering.  Professor Gorril was a gifted and highly respected consulting geotechnical engineer and mentor to many engineering students and professionals who were influenced by his teaching and demonstration of practical application of geotechnical engineering principles.  The income from the fund shall be used to provide scholarship assistance for an in-state student in the Civil Engineering Program at the University of Maine.  Selection of the recipients shall be made by the Civil Engineering Scholarship Selection Committee.  The fund shall be administered by the Office of Student Aid.

THE ELIZABETH M. AND ALLAN F. MCALARY ’13 SCHOLARSHIP FUND was established in the University of Maine Foundation for the University of Maine in 1992 with a gift from his son, Francis J. McAlary ’36. (In 1998, at the request of the donor, the name of the fund was changed to include Elizabeth M. McAlary.)  The income from the fund shall be used it provide scholarship assistance to deserving Civil Engineering students who are graduates of a high schools in the State of Maine.  The Civil Engineering Department shall make selection of the recipients.  The Office of Student Aid shall administer the fund.

THE JACOB W. JR. AND MARTHA JANE BISHOP SCHOLARSHIP FUND was established in the University of Maine Foundation for subsequent income distribution to the University of Maine with a gift from Jacob W. Bishop Jr. ’22 and Martha Jane Bishop.  The income from the fund shall be used to provide scholarship assistance for undergraduate students in the civil engineering field.  Recipients shall be graduates if a State of Maine high school that have financial need.  The minimum award for each recipient shall be $500 per school year.  The Office of Student Aid in consultation with the Civil Engineering Department Selection Committee shall make selection of the recipients.  The Office of Student Aid shall administer the fund.

THE WINSTON C. ROBBINS ’32 ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING SCHOLARSHIP FUND was established in the University of Maine Foundation for the University of Maine in 1993.  The income from the fund shall be used to provide scholarship assistance to an incoming student whose major area of concentration is environmental engineering.  Selection of the recipient shall be based on academic performance and active on-campus leadership.  Preference shall be given to a resident of the State of Maine.  The Chair of the Department of Civil Engineering shall make the selection.  The Office of Student Aid shall administer the fund.

THE J.J. NISSEN SCHOLARSHIP FUND was established in the University of Maine Foundation for the benefit of the University of Maine with a gift from Helen Nissen Beaton in memory of her father, John J. Nissen, who founded the J.J. Nissen Baking Company.  The principal shall be endowed and only the income, as established by the University of Maine Foundation Board of Directors, shall be used to provide scholarship assistance for undergraduate students in the College of Engineering.  The recipients shall be graduates of a state of Maine high school who have either a financial need or a high academic standing.  A preference shall be given to students who will be/or are majoring in Civil Engineering.  To the extent that funds are available, the award shall be for the fill annual tuition amount including related fees.  The Office of Student Financial Aid in consultation with the Dean of the College of Engineering shall make selection of the recipients.  The Office of Student Financial Aid shall administer the income from the fund.  [NOTE: Scholarship not available for awards- income is being retuned to principal.]

THE EDWARD B. MORRISON PACESETTER SCHOLARSHIP FUND was established in 1996 in the University of Maine Foundation for the benefit of the University of Maine, by his family and many friends.  The Civil Engineering Association, which Ed helped start and served as the first president, also contributed to the establishment of the scholarship- the endowed PaCEsetter Scholarship.  The principal shall be endowed and only the income, as established by the University of Maine Foundation Board of Directors, shall be used to provide scholarship assistance for outstanding students choosing to major in an area of civil engineering.  Primarily criteria for selection of students shall be based on past academic achievement, demonstrated commitment and evidence of potential to pursue a career in civil engineering.  In the event that the earnings from the fund are not utilized during the school year, upon written approval of the President of the University of Maine, the unused portion shall be returned to the Foundation to be reinvested and added to the fund’s principal.  Should it ever become impossible or impractical to carry out the purposes of this fund as described above, an alternative purpose which best fits the donor’s intent and wishes shall be designated by the Board of Directors if the University of Maine Foundation in its sole discretion.  Selection of the recipients shall be made by the Civil Engineering Selection Committee in consolation with the Civil Engineering Association.  The income from the fund shall be administered by the Office of Student Financial Aid.

THE PACESETTER SCHOLARSHIP FUND II was established in the University of Maine Foundation in 1996 for the benefit of the University of Maine by the Civil Engineering Association.  The principal shall be endowed and from time to time, the University of Maine Foundation Board of Directors in consultation with the Civil Engineering Association, may make distribution of income and principal to provide scholarship assistance for outstanding students choosing to major in an area of civil engineering Primary criteria for selection of students choosing to major in an area of civil engineering. THE PACESETTER SCHOLARSHIP FUND was established at the University of Maine in 1989 by the Civil Engineering Association.  The fund shall be used to attract and support exceptional students in the civil engineering program at the University of Maine.  Primary criteria for selection of students shall be based on past academic performance, demonstrated commitment and evidence of potential to pursue a career in civil engineering.  Selection of the recipients shall be made by the Civil Engineering Selection Committee in consultation with the Civil Engineering Association.  The fund shall be administered by the Office of Student Aid.

THE MARGARET CHASE MORRIL ’43 CIVIL ENGINEERING SCHOLASHIP was established at the University of Maine in 1989 in honor of Margaret Chase Morrill, the first woman graduate in Civil Engineering at the University of Maine.  (In 1992 the Department of Civil Engineering elected to endow the fund.)  The income from the fund ( to include appreciation) shall be used for scholarship assistance to attract entering first-year women students to the Civil Engineering Program at the University of Maine.  Selection of the recipients shall be made by the Civil Engineering Scholarship Selection Committee.  The fund shall be administered by the Office of Student Aid.

THE KIEWIT SCHOLARSHIP FUND was established at the University of Maine in 1999 by Kiewit Construction of Medway, Massachusetts.  The purpose of the fund is to provide encouragement to students who are enrolled in civil engineering and construction management technology.  Two scholarships of $2,500 will be awarded per academic year to one student majoring civil engineering and to one student majoring in construction management technology.  The awardees must possess outstanding academic potential, maintain good academic standing, and have demonstrated an interest in the field of construction.  Preference will be given to students who demonstrated financial need.  Kiewit will find theses scholarships on an annual basis.  Selection of the recipients shall be made by the Office of Student Financial Aid in consultation of the recipients shall be made by the Office of Student Financial Aid in consultation with the Chair of the Department of Civil Engineering.  The fund shall be administered by the Office of Student Financial Aid.

ERIC W. COBB SCHOLARSHIP FUND was established at the University of Maine Foundation in 2001, for the benefit of the University of Maine with a gift from the Structural Engineering Association of Maine (SEAM) and the Maine Chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineering (ASCE) in memory of Eric W. Cobb, am member of the Class of 1979 and dedicated and talented engineer, colleague and friend.  The principal shall be endowed and only the income, as established by the University of Maine Foundation Board of Directors, shall be used to provide scholarship assistance for students who are majoring in civil engineering who demonstrate financial need and academic merit.  A preference shall be given to residents of the State of Maine.  Should it ever become impossible or impractical to carry out the purpose of this fund as described above, an alternative purpose that best fits the donor’s intent and wishes shall be designated by the Board of Directors of the University of Maine Foundation in its sole discretion.  The Office of Student Financial Aid in consultation with the Dean of the College of Engineering shall make selection of the recipients.  The Office of Student Financial Aid Shall administer the income from the fund.

MBTA-ASCE Transportation Conference Scholarship The Maine Section ASCE and Maine Better Transportation Association Transportation Conference Scholarship is funded annually beginning in 1999 from funds donated by the sponsors at the Transportation Conference.  Award amount and number of recipients will vary depending upon donations received.  Application is madder to the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering Scholarship Committee.  The scholarship recipient shall be enrolled in the Civil Engineering B.S. program as a sophomore, junior or senior and interested in pursuing an engineering career in the transportation field.

The Ellis-Young Engineering Scholarship Fund was established in the University of Maine Foundation for the benefit of the University of Maine, Orono, Maine, by Osbourne N. Ellis, a member of the Class of 1951, and Virginia Young Ellis, in celebration of the Ellis and Young Families. The principal shall be endowed and only the income share be used to provide scholarship aid for undergraduate junior and senior students who are graduates of Maine high schools and attending the University of Maine majoring in civil or mechanical engineering. A preference shall be given to graduates of Lawrence High School, Fairfield, Maine (or its successor school). Criteria for selection shall be in the following order of priority: attitude (assessment shall include nut not limited to self confidence, industriousness and an outgoing, pleasant personally), financial need, scholarship (a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale) and good written and oral communication skills. the Civil and Mechanical Engineering faculty shall make the nominations for the candidates. Selection of the recipient(s) shall be made by the Office of Student Financial Aid in consultation with the Dean of Engineering.
