Professor Sandford teaches soil mechanics and geotechnical engineering at the undergraduate level, while at the graduate level he teaches retaining earth structures, deep foundations, earthwork design, and advanced soil mechanics laboratory. His research interests include reliability-based design, soil-structure interaction, soil-nail walls, pile foundations, and flow through fractured rock. Past projects include Moscow Soil-Nail Project , Brunswick Pile Bitumen Project, and Brunswick Soil-Nail Project.  He is chair of the Soil-Structure Interaction Committee for the Transportation Research Board. Professor Sandford was in engineering practice for 11 years before joining the University of Maine in 1981. He is retiring at the end of August 2016 after 35 years of service.
